How does a launch via High Altitude Balloon work?
High-altitude balloon flight is quite simple:
A sounding balloon is filled with a gas lighter than air (helium or hydrogen), and in accordance with the laws of physics, the balloon rises to a predetermined altitude. As the balloon ascends, the gas expands until, upon reaching the design-specified height, the balloon bursts and the payload begins its descent, slowed and guided by a parachute.
In our more advanced balloons, descent can also be initiated in a controlled manner by separating the recovery module from the balloon at a predetermined altitude. The return is then managed by an AI-controlled parachute, guiding the payload as close as possible to the original launch site.
Our box payload are custom-dimensioned to each client’s specifications and feature cutting-edge telemetry and data transmission via LoRa. All systems fully comply with national regulations and adhere to Ministry of Defense guidelines for LoRa-based communications.
Our payload containers are engineered to withstand the harsh, near-space environment, using ultra lightweight yet extremely durable materials all proudly manufactured in Italy. The main structure of each box is built from polystyrene foam reinforced with phenolic resin, providing exceptional thermal stability and impact resistance. Critical reinforcement components are 3D-printed using carbon-fiber-infused filaments, ensuring maximum strength where it matters most. Thanks to this robust design and meticulous quality control, we have achieved a 100% success rate: every payload launch has returned intact.
Our High Altitude Balloons
We offer two distinct types of high-altitude balloons to meet different mission needs:
Educational Latex Balloon:
Manufactured by our U.S.-based affiliate partners according to our precise technical specifications (tailored for target altitude and payload mass).
Inflated exclusively with helium for safety and simplicity.
Optimized for low cost, making it ideal for school programs and small-group educational projects.
Provides a turnkey solution for students to learn hands-on balloon launch procedures and basic atmospheric measurements.
Professional-Grade Polypropylene Balloon:
Handcrafted in-house using 4-micron-thick polypropylene film, resulting in an ultra-lightweight but extremely strong envelope.
Inflated with hydrogen to maximize lift capacity and achieve higher float altitudes.
Designed exclusively for commissioned launches by research institutions and universities.
Each balloon is custom-engineered to match specific flight parameters (altitude, ascent rate, and payload weight), ensuring reliable performance under professional-grade mission profiles.
Outreach & School Programs
Since its inception, ABProject Space has partnered closely with schools to promote scientific and space education across Italy. We have guided thousands of students from idea conception to successful launch, bridging the gap between professional research and the classroom. Our educational payloadsdesigned for hands-on assembly by pupils include modules for environmental monitoring, cosmic-ray research, video and photo capture, and more. Recognized as one of the top PCTO (Pathways for Transversal Skills and Orientation) partners nationwide, ABProject Space continues to receive collaboration requests from schools and educational institutions throughout the country.
